Story drags on. Only interesting portion was last few chapters. Didn’t care for any of the characters much.

A brilliant telling of the civil rights movement revolving around the later life and death of Dr. King.
Could not finish it

I rarely write reviews....this is only my second. This book was written in the first person, and I am not sure who edited it. It is hard to read, the storyline is terrible. If I was the King family, I would be disgusted at the premise of this story. If there was a way to get my money back, I would. Offensive and poorly written are the three words I would use to describe this book.
Not up to his usual writing

Hard to believe this author laid an egg, but Bishop’s Pawn was a yawner. Way too much boring detail and almost lifeless characters.
Not his best work

I was very disappointed in The Bishop's Pawn, it was not Berry's best work. He noted that this was his first ever attempt at writing a novel from the first person perspective. I didn't like it and don't enjoy novels written in first person. I like the author to be able to shift the perspective from different view points, and up to this novel it was something Berry had always mastered. I hope this was his last attempt at utilizing this method of writing. It was as if the novel was written by a different author entirely.

Unbelievable thesis, way too long and wordy, undeveloped characters. I found the book unsatisfying and the ending not credible. I like most of Mr. Berry’s books but he sometimes goes off the deep end and that is where this book resides, in my opinion.
Thrilling and Beguiling

I greatly enjoyed this book and its look back at Cotton Malone and at Dr. King’s struggle and legacy. Creative, respectful and with some excellent twists and turns.
