Description

“The pages turn themselves” (People) in this white-knuckled mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ruth Ware.

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.

Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

“The Agatha Christie of our generation” (David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author) presents a “deliciously dark and utterly addictive” (Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author) mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This book is a slow build as you get to know the cast of characters, but it quickly becomes a page turner. After you think you have everything sorted out a new twist arises. Fantastic writing by Ruth Ware!

Started strong and then slowed to a crawl. I eventually had to just skip to the end. Took too long to tell the story.

The quivering fetus living within the bump, jumping nervously to the sound of hands clapping, is the main character. I enjoyed learning about Oxford, I did many googles while reading. Perfect vacation read!

I liked the Author’s style, but the entire story hinged on an entitled woman’s perspective. I hated the main character and all of her decisions it was hard to relate. The story still had me clinging for more to find out what really happened.
  • Thought I knew the ending… .

Nope. I thought I knew but then BOOM I’m stunned. Great story by one of my favorite story-tellers. I still feel the pain in my legs from the characters jumping over fences and headaches from them suffering hangovers. Ruth writes details that make you completely immersed in the story. Great read.

Starts very slow. Overall an interesting read but it was hard to keep my attention.
  • Decent with a twist

Decent read. None of the characters are super likable but just when you think you have it figured out there’s a nice little plot twist to keep you going through the end.

I downloaded the book and it allowed me to go to page 38, and then it stopped. I can’t go further. So up to page 38, it’s ok but since I can’t determine plot or character development it’s a 2.
