Description

At the end of the world, a woman must hide her secret power and find her kidnapped daughter in this "intricate and extraordinary" Hugo Award winning novel of power, oppression, and revolution. (The New York Times)

This is the way the world ends. . .for the last time.

It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.

This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Read the first book in the critically acclaimed, three-time Hugo award-winning trilogy by NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin.

What a great origin story to start a series! The perspective used to share this story was beyond still. This story effortlessly moved through time and space, through class and status, through rules and order. Through…you. You…now. You during change and because of change. I left this read thinking, what I am willing to give up to get. And, who. On to book #2.

The story is complex and engaging immediately, I couldn’t put it down and found myself thinking about it throughout the day. The world-building is amazing - complex, lush and intriguing. I love the writing style, with digressions and backstories whetting my curiosity as the main plot evolved. So so good. I’ve already started the next book :)

I have never been so deeply drawn into a story. The style is original and the world building so vast and well thought out that my head was spinning (in a good way). I’m so glad to have found this author and will devour all her work if they are even a fraction of what this was.
  • Confusing - and not in a good way

This book was not my favorite. It starts feeling like you’ve missed an entire book before this one even starts. For half of the book, I felt like I came in halfway through a storyline I knew nothing about. It honestly made me dislike the book a lot more than I otherwise would have. Also, the little blurbs at the end of each chapter, I believe were intended to provide backstory about the seasons, but just lent themselves to the confusion. The terms and words used took away from the story because just when you get into it, another word or term pops up that you have to flip to the appendix to define. The storylines were good, I just think it could have been done in a better way that didn’t cause so much confusion.

What the heck, I don’t know head or tail of this book so confusing. You have better chances understanding the movie “tenet” from Christopher Nolan.

Strong narration. Dynamic storytelling. A page turner. I’m about to start the second book. Love this!

Tries to be erotic but comes off as boring and obscene. Lost interest. Was looking for an exciting adventure but all I got was disappointment. Self gratifying drivel.
