Description

R-Controlled Vowels is one of four in a series of programs entitled Flash Charts.

The other three are: Short Vowel Sounds, Long Vowel Sounds and Vowel Digraph Sounds.

Flash Charts are similar to Flash Cards, but instead of having one word per card there are multiple words per card. Why learn just one word when it is just as easy to learn a group.

The words are chosen to be on the same card have something in common that will help student develop an understanding of how are language is put together:

First of all, all of the words in Flash Charts are one syllable words. This was done to point out that one syllable words and multi-syllabic words require different strategies.

When encountering a word that needs to be sounded out one of the first questions one should ask is what is the vowel type. Thus, the four programs — Short, Long, Digraphs and R-Controlled.

Vowel-Consonant Patterns are key in determining the vowel type. V-C Patterns are shown throughout making it easy for the teacher to make reference to the V-C Pattern whenever needed.

Rhyming is another key skill. Words on Flash Charts usually rhyme, making it easy to read the entire chart once one of the words is known. If there are words other than those on the Flash Chart that rhyme but have a different number of initial consonants, there is a Flash Chart for them that is just a click away.
