A #1 bestseller on The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times!

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

    Could not put it down
  • An eye opener

I had no idea what the nurses experienced. At times I had trouble reading about the war situation. Too sad. But I loved the book.
  • Amazing book

I loved the characters and the Vietnamese war story brought to life, especially hearing about the women. My father served in the Air Force for a year in Vietnam. We were treated poorly, things like dead cats left hanging at our door and some children who weren’t nice to us because of how their families felt about the war. I was 9 years old with a younger brother and a sister and ten when he came home. Our family was forever changed after this as my parents divorced. I am proud of my families service since revolutionary war times. The courage and bravery of those who serve our country should not be forgotten, ever.
  • Easter story

A life of sadness, hurt, parties, love sorrow, tenderness, deceptions, and finally transformation. What a read, and I almost stopped because of the horrors. S. Ware, Coronado

I enjoy this author so much. You make me laugh, cry and bring me inside each novel like I was there with your characters. Each time I finish one of your books, I am left wanting more. Thank you for allowing me that escape.
  • Kristen Hannah Never Disappoints!

As expected, I was totally drawn into the lives of the characters in this story as their experiences and emotions reveal the truths of the Vietnam veterans. She masterfully makes the characters come to life.
  • A Powerful Reminder

    By Ready to Sream!
This novel returned me to a time I didn’t completely understand. Its impact on me has been profound. Each date and veterans’ experiences listed took me back through time to my own life’s challenges during that same time. This book is a powerful reminder to every US citizen how important it is to stay informed and involved in our government’s policies.

Was in HS and college during this time. Know a couple of guys that were helicopter pilots and both say very little about the war.
  • Loved this even though it was a horrid truth
