Description

With his “ability to disgust (and delight) even the most seasoned horror enthusiast” (Publishers Weekly), Bentley Little conjures up your greatest fears as he dares you to spend a night with the haunted....

Julian and Claire Perry and their two children, Megan and James, have made the move to a bigger, nicer home in their city's historic district. But something isn't right.

The neighbors seem reluctant to visit. Claire can't shake the feeling that someone is watching her. Megan receives increasingly menacing and obscene texts. And James is having terrible dreams. No wonder, considering what he's seen in the corner of the basement, staring at him and shuffling closer ever so slowly.

Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the stairs is rising....

Got this book rather inexpensive. I simply cannot believe the amateurish writing, the stilted dialogue, the boring scenes that could be thrown away with zero impact on the “story.” I don’t know where to begin with how awfully stupid this book is. Ooh... everyone’s scared of the basement. Oh no, something appeared then disappeared, so scawey!!! This book is a complete waste of time. No, really, I usually force myself to finish a book that I’ve purchased, but I just can’t even with this one. You know how everyone thinks they have a novel in them? So did this author and unfortunately someone encouraged him to try to write one. He must have had a terrible writer’s group. Oh, and, there’s a brief, graphic sex scene, so that makes the book edgy and cool! What a daring author! He’s really expressing himself through his work! Give me a break...

Ouch harsh. The problem I had with this book was how the author just couldn't seem to stick to the topic. I felt an unnecessary amount of off topic fluff. Instead using words and pages to create well developed characters or intriguing imagery, I found myself rolling my eyes and skimming quite a bit. The ending was decent. I certainly commend the author for trying to write this book from numerous characters povs, and include flashbacks from fictitious historical characters. however, again, I'm left with questions regarding certain events and themes that were simply dropped which leads me to believe they were never fully realized or completely unnecessary. there is probably a good book in here. It just needs a good editor. I gotta say an adjective would pop up approx. Once every 20 pages that seemed so contrived it must have been pulled directly from a thesaurus . I'm sure the author did a better job than I could have. He's listed as a top horror writer. To be fair the only creepy stuff I've read has been written by cormac McCarthy, George r r Martin, Shirley Jackson and other authors that don't go creepy all the time. I think I'm more into a well written book than a creepy book. I just wish there were some out there that were both!
