Description

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo. A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her.

She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Great story and well written. I think that some parts are painfully long and too much detail. Once the point is made, move on. Also, there is a lot of repetition throughout that could have been cut out making this a shorter read.

I could not put this book down. I’ve developed a new appreciation for Haruki Murakami — how his spare prose never gets in the way of the story, as well as his superb storytelling skills. He is one of the true masters of literature of our time.

A little of everything: love, mystery, fantasy, magic. Great well-developed characters. Hard to put down!

Yes it’s very long, but for me it flowed at a good pace and I was eager for each chapter... and to see the ending. But I also thought it left quite a few things unanswered and that dropped my rating from 4 stars to 3. But still, I think it was a good read.
  • Too many goofy stories in one book

Way toooo long, too many story lines and even though it is a super long book and I was hoping they would somehow connect the ending left too many of the stories unfinished!!! Don’t waste your time reading this. Horrible read in my opinion.

I am a fan of Charles deLint. Murakami also delves into urban fantasy - in a different and enjoyable way. I've read all of deLint's books, and will probably read all of Murakami's.

This book is long, so if you plan on reading it prepare yourself. I personally couldn’t put it down!!!!!! It was the third book I read by Haruki Murakami. I absolutely love his writing, and all the magic realism his books have to offer. This book is seriously in my top favorites.
