  • The Maidens is a Greek tragedy in a modern English context.

    By bxj3
This story is a psychological mystery and a thriller that offers few clues throughout, but those that are included are intriguing. Even the armchair detective may be in for a surprise at the end. The characters are complex and their relationships are certainly worth exploring. There are no super heroes here; thinking is what matters in The Maidens.
  • Ok but like second album slump

This story is not as compelling as his first novel, The Silent Patient. It is seriously contrived and perhaps worse still, implausible and pretentious.
  • Lead on mystery

I didn't like the how the killler turned out to be…It seemed rushed, but the idea is novel.
  • Bummed.

His previous book, The Silent Patient, consumed my life when I read it for the first time. The twist was amazing, I didn’t see it coming. I have to say, that the callouts, and that both these books exist in the same universe made me feel like I knew a secret. I also enjoyed the Greek influences grounded in this story. But I read all 450 some pages, the twist started exciting but quickly was a letdown. I’m a little bummed that I lost $15 bucks for this book. I’ll still be interested to see if Alex puts out another book like the silent patient, but instead I’ll support my local library.
  • Boring

I made it to page 96 and just can’t read anymore. The first book was pretty good but this one is awful.
  • Boilerplate

    By Honest Earls
This mystery had all the ingredients of a mystery story and as following a recipe, baked an average read. Boilerplate, routine, unexciting. More murdered young women. Yawn.
  • A fantastic page turning read….

  • Absolutely love this author

After reading The Silent Patient, I decided to read The Maidens, and it did NOT disappoint. Michaelides is on track to becoming, if not already, one of the greatest authors within the psychological thrillers genre. Everything from world building to the relationship he crafts between the characters and the readers — there’s no way for you to see the ending coming. As soon as you thought you had it figured out, the entire story turns upside down. I really enjoy how immersive his books are and the level of psychological detail that is put into the characters. It is definitely worth the read and will leave you speechless.
